Building Green with Steel

The U.S. Green Building Council developed the LEED rating system to encourage people to build green and to help them do it successfully. Kodiak Steel Homes kits meet or exceed LEED specifications in several categories related to energy savings, environmental impact, pollution control, water conservation, etc. Click here to learn more about how one of our kits can help you earn LEED certification for your new home.

Tough 2008 Storm Season

On June 11, a wave of violent storms swept across the midwest, killing four teenagers at a Boy Scout camp in Iowa and causing $20 million in damage to buildings at Kansas State University, including the one housing the school's nuclear reactor. These tragic events have helped this year become the deadliest tornado season since 1998. By late summer, tornadoes had killed more than 115 people, almost twice as many as in a typical year. Unfortunately experts have predicted that the 2008 hurricane season will also be more active than usual, and the early indications are that they're going to be right. After a record-setting number of Atlantic hurricanes in 2005, the U.S. was spared any major storms in 2006 and 2007. However, scientists at Colorado State University warn that trend will not continue. They forecast the following for 2008:

  • A 69 percent chance that at least one major hurricane will make landfall somewhere on the U.S. coastline (17% greater probability than average).
  • A 45 percent chance that a major hurricane will make landfall on the U.S. East Coast, including the Florida Peninsula (14% greater probability than average)
  • A 44 percent chance that a major hurricane will make landfall on the Gulf Coast between the Florida Panhandle and Brownsville (14% greater probability than average).

Several States Adopting Updated Code

Last year, the International Congress of Building Officials (ICBO) released its 2006 revision of the International Building and Residential Codes (IBC/IRC 2006), which contains many changes from earlier versions. Although a handful of states adopted the new code last year, as of January 1, 2008 it takes effect in much of the country. Even the California Building Code has been revised to conform to the new IBC 2006. In order to comply with this code, we will have to slightly modify some of our designs, and these changes could increase our delivery times by two or three weeks in some cases. We appreciate your understanding as we work as hard as we can to provide you the most up-to-date, cost-effective, and secure pre-engineered housing available.

Kodiak Owners Named Top Conservationists

Arkansas sportsman wins conservation award
Two of their many conservation awards

The Arkansas Wildlife Federation recently named two of our owners, Scott and Barbara House, their Rex Hancock Conservationist of the Year for 2007. This is the second prestigious environmental award the Houses have received in the past year for developing wildlife habitat at their Bearitage Farm (their Kodiak Steel Homes Crestwood 4 farm house is pictured in several places on the site).

New Color Selector is Up and Running

The Kodiak Steel Homes site now offers two animated tools to help you visualize the colors and materials you want for your home. The standard color selector is a 3D rendering of our Pendleton model that allows you to change the siding, roofing, and trim colors or even substitute brick and shingle to get the look you want. The special Windmaster color selector is based on our Windmaster Palm Beach model. Since Windmasters only come as a complete package, it doesn't show the brick and shingle, but you can choose from all the available colors for our steel roofing, steel siding, and Polar Wall insulated vinyl siding. We think you will have a lot of fun with both of these.
